Meet Book Club writer in residence - Jane Gallagher

Jane Gallagher

Jane began her career in journalism in 1989 as trainee reporter at The Ormskirk Advertiser.
In 1992 she moved to The Liverpool Echo where she remained for 11 years and undertook a variety of roles including news reporter, feature writer and editor of the in-house magazine.
In 2003 she left to become a freelance writer and has written for numerous publications including The Daily Mirror, The Daily Mail, The Times, Bella, Best, Mother & Baby, Family Circle, Eve, Woman & Home and Junior Magazine.
In 2007 she was appointed writer in residence at a Lancashire prison and continues to write for The Liverpool Daily Post as well as penning the weekly Family Matters column which appears in The Southport Visiter, Formby Times, Crosby Herald and the Midweek Advertiser.
In her spare time Jane is trying to write two novels, one aimed at adults and another for children.
Her favourite writers are Anita Shreve, Emily Bronte, Ian McEwan, John Irving and Shirley Hughes.

John Nelson Reviews The West Lancashire Golf Club - A History of Golf at Blundellsands

NOW we have it - the definitive history of the West Lancashire Golf Club - and it’s been well worth waiting for.
It’s a magnificent book and what an auspicious time to publish it – in 2008, the year in which Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture. What a nice gesture to dedicate the book as a contribution from Merseyside.

Sefton residents are being encouraged to join their local library as part of a national campaign.

This Saturday (April 26) is 'Join A Library Day', which is an initiative as part of the National Year Of Reading.

A word of warning, this book will make you laugh, it will make you smile but it will also make you cry.
But it’s a book everyone should read. It’s a book about death. But more than that, it’s a book about how to live. And however long your life will be; this book teaches you about living life to the full and making the most of every single day.

Group Shoots for Reading Success

A group of football fanatic children have been encouraged to read by Premier League footballers.

Youngsters from Waterloo Primary School have been taking part in the 2008 Premier League Reading Stars group, which encourages children to read more through promotion by footballers from the top 20 clubs in England.

Can Fiction Change Lives?

Why read fiction? That was the central question at the heart of a fascinating day at the newly refurbished Bluecoat last weekend where writers Kate Mosse, Philippa Gregory, Lionel Shriver, Clare Allen and Bel Mooney were joined by Shami Chakrabarti to talk about the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction.
As well as the opportunity to meet some established writers it was an opportunity to find out how lives had been touched by literature.

I've taken advantage of the car being repaired to get stuck in to this anthology on the long(ish) train journey from Liverpool to Southport.

Brilliant, classy storytelling - but perhaps not as twist-filled as I was anticipating. You do get the impression old Roald thought his fellow human beings were a thoroughly unpleasant lot.

Great news for fiction fans. Following the success of our newly launched Book Club three authors have signed up for special Meet The Author events.

In association with our partners Pritchards and Sefton Libraries three authorshave signed up for events later this year.

I first came across Neville Cardus's writings in 1948 when I was a wee boy of 12 years.
a lad in our class Harry Wassall had a copy of 'World Sports', when he had read the copy he give it to me in exchange for my school dinners main course and sweet for one week.

A fly in the ointment is someone or something that spoils a pleasant situation then you will need a whole set of swatters for Anne Fine's latest novel.
According to Fine's central character, Lois, at least.

After reading Patrick Gale's Notes From An Exhibition I wanted to read more of his work.
I picked up "Rough Music" a book which is loosely based on event sin his own life.
