If anyone is enjoying He Kills Coppers on ITV1 at the moment, they might enjoy The Long Firm, the debut novel from He Kills... author Jake Arnott.
What Patrick Gale's reading
Posted by Jane Gallagher on March 29, 2008 10:04 AM
Earlier this week I finished reading Patrick Gale's new novel, "Notes From An Exhibition" about a family affected by an artistic mother's bipolar disorder. It is beautifully written and probably the best book I have read so far this year.
Yesterday I interviewed Patrick for a forthcoming article for this column. But as a taster he revealed what he is reading at the moment.
Joseph Delaney

If Joseph Delaney has a secret to writing then it must be persistence.
Rejected “at least 96 times before he finally achieved writing success at the grand old age of 58, the former English teacher is living proof that if you believe in something you should stick with it. At least to a certain extent.

My Favourite Reads - by Sue Ormesher

I'm a member of a book club and am reading madly at the moment.
I have just read Stuart Maconie's 'Pies and Prejudice' - a journey around the north of England, which I absolutely loved. He studied in Southport and the Scarisbrick Pub gets a mention.
My Favourite Reads - by Caroline Kenyon

I read books quite quickly - and then sadly when I look back at them I can't remember very well what happened!
I think it's partly down to a bad memory but also I get so engrossed in whatever I am reading at the time that I find it hard to recall anything I have read previously - a bit like listening to one song and trying to remember the tune of another.
A Hair-raising Read!

Briony just couldn't put The Spook's Apprentice down!

Juggling Books

Here's a confession. I am very promiscuous when it comes to books. I will read anything and everything and I have several on the go at once. So what have I read this month?
Touch and go

The name Studs Terkel probably doesn't mean a great deal to radio listeners in the UK. Yet in Chicago he's world famous!
Studs is a really fascinating character. Having trained as a lawyer, actor, writer and through this ended up with his own radio show, he has interviewed some of the most famous personalities of several generations.

I am very excited because a review copy of a book I have been waiting for is winging its way to me in the post.
The book in question is Waterloo Sunset which is published next month and was written by Cheshire based crime writer, Martin Edwards.
Martin's fictional detective, Harry Devlin is back in business and, I am told, the Iron Men on Crosby beach will play a prominent role in the plot.

Do you ever feel pressured to finish a book, even if you aren't enjoying it?
I used to, but not anymore. Life's too short.
A Fine Meeting

On World Book Day I finally got to meet Anne Fine, an author I have admired from afar for many years.
Anne appeared at Crosby Civic Hall for the event organised by Pritchard's Books and Sefton Libraries and spoke to hundreds of children during the day.
Here's a photo of me interviewing Anne, whose new book, A Fly In The Ointment will be a future featured Book of the Month.![]()

OUR first Book Of The Month is Second Time Lucky by best-selling author, Sophie King.
The novel follows the lives of five people who live together in a former stately home which has been converted into luxury apartments.
Sophie got the idea for locating her novel in this setting after she visited such a property.
Who's reading what in Jane's family?

I am reading Billie Morgan by Joolz Denby. From the very first page of Billie’s memoirs she reveals she is a murderer. But how did a gift shop owner in her 40’s end up killing anyone? Fasten your seatbelts for a trip through the murky world of a Hell’s Angels chapter in Bradford which careers out of control and crashes into the present day.
Ben, seven, is reading The Werepuppy by Jacqueline Wilson.
“It’s about a little boy who loves his dog. But the dog is always getting him into trouble. It makes me laugh.
Briony, ten, is reading Dani’s Diary by Narinder Dhami
“Dani’s mum has just got remarried and she is having a hard time with her awful stepsister. Dani’s reveals all this in her diary. One day Her Gran gives her something to read. It is her own diary which shows how she felt when her family moved to England from India. Reading the diaries makes it seem real.
My dad, Frank is reading “More Time For Politics: Diairies 2001 -2007 by Tony Benn.
“A fascinating insight into the life of one of Britian’s most (in)famous politicians. I love the way it mixes details about his family life and his grandchildren with his thoughts on important meetings with world leaders.
